Why the scalp comes first

Every strand starts at the root. Start there.

Your scalp makes a natural oil called sebum. Day by day it mixes with sweat, styling products and dead skin cells and settles where your hair begins. A quick wash through the lengths often leaves it behind.

Scalp with buildup compared with a clean scalp A cross-section of the scalp. On the left, a layer of oil, sweat, product residue and dead skin cells sits at the base of each hair. On the right, after Root Cleanse, the scalp surface is clear around each hair. Buildup at the roots After Root Cleanse Oil and residue Dead skin cells A clean, clear surface

  • Sebum

The natural oil your scalp makes to protect skin and hair. Some is healthy; too much feels heavy.

  • Sweat

Workouts, warm days and hats all add moisture and salt at the roots.

  • Product residue

Dry shampoo, styling products and conditioner that land on the scalp instead of the strands.

  • Dead skin cells

Your scalp renews its surface constantly. Old cells can collect and show up as flakes.

Signs your scalp could use a reset

  • Roots look oily by day two
  • Hair falls flat at the crown
  • Your scalp feels itchy, tight or coated
  • You use dry shampoo most days

Why it matters for your routine

A clean scalp is the starting point for everything else you do. Serums and scalp treatments reach your skin, not the layer sitting on top of it, and your hair feels lighter from the roots.

How to use

Two minutes, at the roots.

Root Cleanse is made for your scalp, not your lengths. Use it once a week or every other week as a reset, and your regular shampoo the rest of the time.

  1. 01

    Wet hair and scalp

Rinse with warm water until your scalp is fully wet, not just your hair.

  2. 02

    Apply to the scalp

Part your hair in sections and apply directly at the roots, front to back.

  3. 03

    Massage and wait

Work it in with your fingertips or a scalp brush, then leave it on for two minutes.

  4. 04

    Lengths, then rinse

Want more lather? Add your regular shampoo to the lengths, work it down the strands, then rinse well.

The cool tingle is the peppermint oil. If your scalp feels irritated, rinse and stop using. For external use only; avoid contact with eyes.

Questions

Frequently asked

How often should I use Root Cleanse?

Once a week or every other week, depending on how your scalp feels. You don't need it every time you wash; use your regular shampoo in between. If your roots feel heavy or oily sooner, lean toward once a week. If your scalp tends to feel dry, every other week is plenty.

Do I still need my regular shampoo?

Root Cleanse is made for the scalp. If you'd like more lather through your lengths, apply your regular shampoo to the strands after Root Cleanse, work it down, then rinse everything together.

Why does my scalp tingle?

That cool tingle comes from the peppermint oil in the formula. If your scalp feels irritated rather than refreshed, rinse it out and stop using it.

Can I use it with scalp serums and treatments?

Yes. Use Root Cleanse first so your serum or treatment goes onto a clean scalp, then follow that product's directions.

Does it contain wheat or other common allergens?

Yes, it contains hydrolyzed wheat protein and wheat starch, plus peppermint and rosemary oils. If you have a wheat allergy or sensitive skin, check the full ingredient list and talk with your doctor before using it.

Can I use it alongside my Medi Tresse supplements?

Yes. Root Cleanse is a once-a-week or every-other-week scalp reset, and Replenish and Regrow is taken daily, so they fit into the same routine.
